Meet Craig
Craig, our learning and activities assistant, is part of our small but mighty learning team! He keeps super busy with our school visits, Making a Mess toddler group and school holiday craft activities.
What does your typical day look like?
When I’m not arranging school bookings, I’m delivering school workshops, theme boxes to schools, visiting schools, delivering family craft activities or guided tours. Each day truly brings something new!
What do you love about your job?
I love everything about my job, but if I had to pick something specific, I’d say I love all of the opportunities I’ve been given. I’ve got to utilise my creative writing skills and knowledge of Archaeology throughout a few passion projects.
If you could add any object to our museum collection, what would it be?
Something Roman, perhaps armour, pottery or even a unique sword that’s as precious as the Yarm Viking helmet or The Dice Players painting.
How do you get a job in a museum?
Volunteering is always a good way to get experience, but I got my first job in a museum because of my experience in the retail sector – it’s all about customer service, so any job involving that will help your chances of working in a museum.
Which object in the museum would you like to see come to life?
I think if the characters in The Dice Players painting came to life and started running around the museum causing mischief, we’d all be in for a shock! It would be something to see though.
Why are museums important?
Museums are important because they preserve our history, local or otherwise, for future generations. Modern museums have also got very good at helping young people to appreciate what’s on display, and social media has played a huge part in it.
