Meet Beka
We’re showcasing our amazing parks and garden team for #LoveParks Week! They work in all weathers to keep our green spaces looking beautiful. We caught up with our Parks and Garden Coordinator Beka and asked her some fun questions to find out more.
Why are parks important?
Parks are important breathing spaces from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. They’re a great asset for local communities – providing a place for recreation, mindfulness and wildlife watching. But more so, they’re an important factor in helping control climate change, clean our air and capture carbon.
Describe your job with a song title.
Heigh-ho – Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs!
What’s the coolest thing about your job?
The crazy encounters you have with nature! From seeing deer to watching foxes grab grey squirrels, you just never expect it and it’s always amazing to see.
What superpower would be useful in your job?
Super strength! Or to be in two places at once.
If someone only has an hour to spend in our park or gardens, what would you recommend they do or see?
It depends on the season…
In autumn, a crisp walk through Quarry Wood under the beech trees – the colours are amazing.
During the winter, get the binoculars out and go birdwatching. We’re so lucky to have lots of migrant birds such as redwings visit us.
In spring, it’s all about the re-emergence of life after the winter. A walk around the back of the Museum is lovely at this time of year with lots of spring flowers popping up.
During the summer, a picnic and games on North Field (pssst! It’s our least used field so most of the time you’ll have it all to yourself). Or a wander through the Walled Garden – the colours are stunning at this time of year, the bees are busy making honey and the Poison Plot is looking particularly fatal!
