We often get asked which is the best route to take around the museum. There’s no right or wrong way to explore the museum, but here are a few tips from our expert front of house team:
- If you want to learn about the history of the hall, the timeline and the families that lived here, turn right from the entrance lobby and start your journey through the Green Gallery (which was originally a library!) and into The Collecting Gallery.
- If you’re looking for indoor fun and play, start by going straight up the staircase or in the lift to the three first floor galleries. You’ll find the Play Kitchen in the Orange Gallery (press 2 if you’re in the lift) and trains, boats, construction toys and the popular Art Cart in the Blue Gallery. (Also look out for our volunteer-led Discovery Station!)
- If you’ve come to experience the atmosphere, turn left through the gift shop and step back in time through our clock lobby. Experience the bustling Victorian Street with shops run by our staff, lease holders and costumed volunteers (don’t forget to bring £1 to visit the sweet shop!), and have a go at the old fashioned childhood games in the street.
- If you need to burn off some energy, walk to the end of the Victorian Street, follow the signs for the garden and turn right along the tarmac path to our Woodland Walk for outdoor fun and mud kitchen.
- If you’re looking for beautiful views and the delights of nature, a peaceful walk or some fresh produce (during the summer), follow the signs to our stunning Walled Garden (turn left opposite The Forge in the Victorian Street). You won’t be disappointed!
- If you’re in need of refreshments or a tasty treat, go left through the gift shop and head straight through to the Victorian Street. You’ll find our lovely tearoom on the right hand side with indoor and outdoor seating.
- If you want a special gift, unique homeware or a pocket money toy, visit our museum gift shop to the left of the welcome desk (you don’t need a museum ticket to visit the shop).
- If you’re not sure what you want to discover or are looking for inspiration, enjoy finding your own adventure through our fascinating galleries, Victorian Street and gardens.
Don’t forget, our friendly front of house team are super knowledgeable and always here to offer you advice and help you explore our wonderful museum and grounds.
